State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training, Hammond, Indiana
On December 16, 2010, over 80 law enforcement officers were in
attendance for a State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT)
course that took place at the Hammond Federal Courthouse. The
topic of this training was Domestic Terrorism, most specifically
Sovereign Citizens, and indicators to watch out for as an officer
who may encounter these individuals. For those who missed the

Child Sexual Predator Meetings, South Bend, Indiana
During the month of February 2011, we in partnership with the
Highland Police Department Child Sexual Predator Program, the
Allen County Sheriff’s Department and US Marshal’s Service
conducted three regional meetings that focused on the Sex and
Violent Offender Registry. Jeff Shimkus from the Allen County
Sheriff’s Department instructed the course in an attempt to assist
agencies in coming up with a plan to manage the sex offender
registration process in each respective county throughout Northern
Indiana. The courses took place in South Bend on the 16th of
February, Fort Wayne on the 17th of February and West Lafayette
on the 22nd of February with 44 attendees combined for the events.
Crime Scene Investigation, Highland, Indiana
This 4 ½ day course took place March 21-25, 2011 in Highland, Indiana.
It instructed officers on how to preserve a crime scene; and document
evidence through sketching, photographing, videography, notes, etc. It
also showed officers how to recognize and collect evidence utilizing
casting materials, gelatin lifters, etc. The course focused on locating and
preserving gun related evidence. The 26 officers who attended this
course were involved in many hands-on activities.
Keeping Our Communities Safe Conference, South Bend, Indiana
This 2 day event took place on April 19-20, 2011 at the University of
Notre Dame’s McKenna Hall. The conference offered training sessions related,
but not limited to: Law Enforcement Technology; Youth Gang Identification and
Trends; Violent Crime; Victim/Witness/Service Issues; Officer Safety/Survival;
Critical Incident Response and Internet/Child Predator Crimes.
Basic Law Enforcement Crime Scene Video Training, Highland, Indiana
This course was also presented in October 2010. It was designed for law enforcement officers who process crime scenes. The course taught the officers to tell a story by utilizing video
technology.
Comprehensive Approach to Sex Offender Management, Valparaiso, Indiana
The course took place on May 10 at the Porter County Sheriff’s Department and May 11, 2011at the
West Lafayette Police Department. The CASOM training was designed for all those involved in the
management of adult sex offenders and juveniles who commit sexual offenses. It was a basic training that
emphasized the importance of collaboration and system-wide planning that promotes community safety.
Training topics included an overview of the comprehensive approach, who offenders are, and what we
know about victims of sexual crimes. Sex offender assessment, registration, treatment, and monitoring, as
well as public education and collaboration were covered.
